The Mayor of Seattle Wants the Mayor of New Orleans to Listen to Phish

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray wants New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu to listen to Phish. In particular, he wants him to listen to“Wilson.”

JamBase has pointed out that Murray made the recommendation today via Twitter, posting a YouTube video of the band’s July 26, 2013 rendition of the song from The Gorge in George, WA. Guitarist Trey Anastasio (now famously) wore a jersey for Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson during the performance—an event that was highlighted in NFL Films’ recent feature on the Phish/Seahawks connection. In addition, the “Willlllsooooon” chant associated with the song has now been adopted by Seatlle’s fans and can be heard during the team’s home games.

The Seattle Seahawks and New Orleans’ Saints will face off tomorrow at 4:35pm Et/1:35 PT. Who knows, maybe Mitch Landrieu will give Ed Murray a recommendation of his own. It shouldn’t be hard to find one, seeing as New Orleans “Saints” is itself a reference to a song.

He must really hate the guy if he wants him to listen to Phish

Anders Osborne, Rebirth Brass Band, Hot 8 brass band, Allen Toussaint, Dr John… I think NOLA wins on the music side!

I’m not arguing that NOLA’s music isn’t crazy awesome, but you have to appreciate Seattle for these old and new bands: Jimi Hendrix, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Heart, Foo Fighters, The Head and The Heart, Postal Service, and Death Cab for Cutie. Its some different genres then NOLA but you have to admit that these bands have all made a name for themselves.

Screaming Trees, Mother Love Bone, Mudhoney…

A lot of great bands have come out of Seattle over the years. New Orleans is the birthplace of jazz. This football game is yet to take place, but in the musical battle New Orleans is the clear winner.

New Orleans gave us jazz. Jazz! Louis Armstrong. Jelly Roll Morton. King Oliver. Dr. John. The Meters. The Marsalis Family. Allan Toussaint. Fats Domino. King Oliver. Preservation Hall. The Dirty Dozen. Rebirth. Dixieland. Ragtime. Rhythm & Blues. Early rock. 2nd line. Jazzfest. And some little party called Mardi Gras.

Hendrix is not exactly “from” Seattle when it comes to music….. He’s from the Chitlin Circuit, Little Richard, and England. He might as well have been born on Mars.

Not taking sides, just adding to the discussion: N.O: Louie Prima(!!!!); Seattle: Fleet Foxes…

The game is in Seattle and without Jazz our scene would not exist so NOLA wins the music battle (if there ever was one). Plus I’ve done a couple of shows in Seattle and people just refuse to react to the music. No issue at the Gorge, people definitely get down there. But the crowd is pretty stiff whenever I check music in Seattle. Just a personal observation.

That’s just hilarious, of all the places I wouldn’t expect it would be a professional football game, but funny and cool…Da Da, Da Da…...Wilson!

Tim January 15, 2014, 15:58:03

Just what the Phish scene needs….more clueless fans who don’t know why they like the band, all but for a chant.

Looks like Mayor Landrieu lost his bet to Mayor Murray and had to accept Phish for Jazz Fest. Next time he’ll bet bet a case of beer.
