Gov’t Mule Perform First Two Albums at Island Exodus

Gov’t Mule kicked off their 20th anniversary celebration by performing their first two albums in full at Island Exodus in Negril, Jamaica on Wednesday and Thursday.

Mule kicked things off on Wednesday by working their way through all of the tracks from their 1995 self-titled debut album during the night’s first set. The group was joined by saxophonist Bill Evans for a few of those tunes, including “Trane” (with “Norwegian Wood” and “3rd Stone From The Sun” teases), “Mule” (with “Get Away” and “Afro-Blues” teases) and “Dolphineus.” Evans then returned during the second set for “Stoop So Low (Reggae Outro)” before London Souls guitarist Tash Neal joined the fray for “Little Wing.” JJ Grey, who opened the night, came out next, sitting in with Neal, Evans and Mule for a take on “54-46 (That’s My Number)” that was sandwiched between “Good Morning Little School Girl” and “That’s What Love Will Make You Do.” Evans and Neal also returned for the encore to help Mule close things out with “Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home.”

The album covers continued on Thursday night, when Mule performed their 1998 release Dose in full during the first set. The band once again got some help from Evans, who sat in for “Birth of the Mule” and “John the Revelator” (with “Wade in the Water” lyrics). The saxophonist also appeared during the second set for “Misunderstood” before Neal took the stage for a take on “Sco-Mule” that featured a “Smoke on the Water” tease. Evans, Neal, Grey and singer-songwriter/guitarist Machan Taylor then sat in for “Take Me To the River.” The encore also featured another appearance by Evans for “Trouble Every Day” before Neal and Grey came back out for a “Smokestack Lightning” finale.

Gov’t Mule’s Island Exodus will continue tonight.

Wow, those people are so very lucky to witness that. I have a feeling they will do Life Before Insanity tonight. The 20th year of the Mule is here! It’s time to SHOUT!

I have to laugh at all the fools wasting time following cover bands like Phil Lesh or Furthur Lynyrd Skynyrd when CURRENT greatness is right in front of their eyes, Warren Haynes/Gov’t Mule are TODAY.Get Behind the Mule.

I wish I could have been there to witness these shows! I have no doubt that due to the songlists and the demand to hear them live will surely mean a download to purchase is in the near future.I for one will purchase it !!!
