John Frusciante Forms New Band with Omar Rodriguez-Lopez

Former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante has announced the formation of a new band—called Kimono Kult—with former At the Drive-In and Mars Volta guitarist and longtime collaborator Omar Rodríguez-López. The group also features Teri Gender Bender (vocals, guitar), Nicole Turley (bass, drum machine, trumpets, synths, backing vocals), Dante White-Aliano (guitar, synths) and Laena Geronimo (violin, bass, trumpets).

The band’s debut EP, Hiding in the Light, is set for digital release on March 4 through Neurotic Yell Records. According to the label, the EP is “four songs of electro/dub/afro-beat/avant-freak/jazz-like conversations of instrumental ecstasy.” The group have also released one track from the album—“Todo Menos El Dolor”—which you can hear below.

This is Frusciante’s first official band since his 2009 departure from the Chili Peppers. Until now, the iconic guitarist has only released solo material, including the 2012 full-length PBX Funicular Intaglio Zone and last year’s EP, Outsides.

Seriously Omar? January 21, 2014, 12:49:44

The this is what you would rather do? The Mars Volta broke up so you could be in a shittier version of it with some chicks and a junkie? Weak sauce dude.

Frusciante is super talented the chili’s suck now without him. This sounds like an awesome new project and hopefully they tour etc.

Just had a listen. What a waste of talent. It was bad enough when Yoko Ono made this music first time around.

Completely agree with Mat. To hear John describe “music” then listen to this = SAD. Much prefer his solos.

this sounds like a solid blend of bosnian rainbows and modern frusciante. solid work. look forward to the album.

I just saw John Frusciante and Omar Rodriguez form band and was elated. This could be cool? I’m hoping it is. Would be really disappointed if it isn’t and it was just like “chicks are cool” so…

:( I miss the real John Frusciante…the one that made real music with a REAL guitar. This is such a waste of your talent Frusciante, such a waste. Good luck buddy.

Love Omar and was excited to hear this. Jesus… sounds like high schoolers ripping off the Volta. Pointless. Alas…

Let’s cool it on the junkie talk – JF’s been clean for over 15 years.

Better to call it a new collaboration… it is not a ‘band’ in the way most appear to be taking it. Interesting sound… But not terribly memorable as far as I can hear. Like the clip of the fourth song best, personally.
