i went to Roosterwalk last year for the first time and found that it is a very well run event with great staff and top notch local and regional music + headliners and good food…i would never go back there and camp however but i may get a hotel and go, you aren’t allowed to bring in your own outside beer and there was VA’s finest checking in on that at your campsite every 10 minutes for the entire weekend, and they did not announce the no outside alcohol rule until the day of the gate open. So for those that are use to showing up and having a few beers at the campsite this is not the festival for you…

Mike, welcome to the RoosterWalk family! I have attended the festival every year and could not be more proud of the staff and organizers and the job that they have done as it continues to grow yet remain true to its humble grassroot beginnings. It stinks that you had a bad experience camping as my experiences could not be more different. In fact, like most festivals, camping is part of the experience. Late night picking, talking to the artists, meeting new friends and catching up with old ones…an experience not to be missed! It is true that you are not allowed to bring in beer, but keep in mind that this is not a RoosterWalk rule, but a state of Virginia rule and something that they must unfortunately abide by. That being said, if you have been to a festival before you know the deal. Bring it in anyway, keep it discreet, use solo cups and observe the rules about not taking it out of the campground and you wont have any problems. As for the police presence, they do have officers there which I am quite thankful for, but in all the years that I have attended they have never harassed me or any of my friends and I have never had a cooler checked. YMMV, but I found them to be interested in keeping everyone safe, not writing tickets or arresting people. And, if you like and attend festivals, there are many things higher up the totem pole in terms of arrestable offenses if they got to feeling froggy. So, come early, stay late and dance the night away. I will attend RoosterWalk for as long as I am able and would not miss it for the world. Rooooo ra rooo ra roooooooooo!

This is the last year RW will be at Blue Mountain. Next year it’ll be further south in Axton.
