Umphrey’s McGee paid tribute to their original drummer, Mike Mirro, during last night’s show at the Tennessee Theatre in Knoxville, TN. As previously reported, Mirro passed away yesterday at the age of 35. Mirro helped found the band in 1997 and played with them until 2002, when he departed the group to pursue a medical school education.

Umphrey’s McGee honored their friend and former band with a number of old school tunes that were first played during his time with the band, including “Uncle Wally,” “All In Time,” “Nothing Too Fancy,” “Kimble,” “White Man’s Moccasins,” “Prowler,” “Divisions” and a cover of Bob Marley’s “Trenchtown Rock.” The group also worked a number of teases of Ike Turner and the Family Vibes’ “Garbage Man” into their “Nothing Too Fancy” that opened the second set. The cover was traditionally sung by Mirro when he played with Umphrey’s, and he even joined them for the tune on two occasions following his departure.

A statement posted on Umphrey’s McGee’s Facebook page last night reads:

It is with heavy hearts that we have learned of our good friend & former drummer Mike Mirro’s passing. As many of you know, Mike’s love for music & unique sense of humor are still present today in the music that we create. Umphrey’s McGee wouldn’t be who we are without all of the passion & musicality Mike added to the music for the first 5 years of our career.

There are no words that can convey the feeling of loss we are collectively feeling, we have lost a friend, a brother & a man without whom there would be no Umphrey’s McGee. Mikey, we’ll always love you for the amazing person that you were and we’ll carry your spirit with us through the music.

We’ll miss you.

Umphrey’s McGee will continue their tour tonight with a show at the LC Pavilion in Columbus, OH.
