Fred Armisen to Lead New Late Night Band, The Roots Add Horn Section for The Tonight Show

New Late Night band via Seth Meyers’ Twitter account

Fred Armisen will lead and curate the Late Night band when his former SNL co-star Seth Meyers takes over the show next week. The Portlandia star—who has played a number of bands throughout his career—will be joined by bandmates Seth Jabour (guitar), Kimberley Thompson (drums), Eli Janney (keyboards) and Syd Butler (bass).

As previously reported, The Roots will join Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show when he starts his run as host of the long-running talk show on February 17. In order to create a classic, soul feel reminiscent of the classic Tonight Show, The Roots will throw a horn section into the mix when they move to the new program. One of their new players will be Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings trumpeter David Guy, who also joined Phish for their Exile on Main Street musical costume at Festival 8 back in 2009. Guy’s credits also include work with Antibalas, Menahan Street Band, Amy Winehouse, The New Pornographers, Charles Bradley and The Sugarman 3, among others.

You can watch Fallon and The Muppets play a rendition of The Band’s classic “The Weight” on the final episode of Late Night with Jimmy Fallon here.

Way to shoot for the rafters, Seth…. Jimmy Fallon hired The Roots when he took over the show, and you hire Fred Armisen?!

This was clearly a move to incorporate Fred’s comedic skills, moreso than his musical ones (such as they are). Fred is probably the sidekick as well as bandleader. Looks like this may end up being the “Seth and Fred Show;” there’s no way Fred’s there simply to be bandleader….

I hadn’t thought about him being a sidekick, that explains a lot.

The addition of Armisen is a great move. Like Jimmy, Seth is a good guy with comedic talent par excellence. The addition of a horn section to the Roots is brilliant too. We can’t wait for Late Night and Tonight to debut.

If you get a chance listen to Fred Armisen’s version of the Beatles’ “Blackbird” from Howard Stern’s Birthday party. Pretty funny stuff.
