Mickey Hart and Dr. Adam Gazzaley will team up for a Rhythm and the Brain session at SXSW this week. Gazzaley, who is the founder of UC San Francisco’s Neuroscience Brain Imaging Center, will give a visual demonstration of Hart’s brain as he plays music. Fans will be able to see the drummer’s brain waves transform in real time during his live percussion performance.

Hart and Gazzaley began working together a few years ago, when they joined forces to study the brain’s rhythmic patterns. The goal of their research was to determine if any of those patterns could be used to help treat people with neological diseases such as Alzheimer’s. The pair gave a similar demonstration of their findings at a convention in New Orleans back in September of 2012.

Hart and Gazzaley’s Rhythm of the Brain session will take place this Thursday in Room 16AB of the Austin Convention Center.
