NYC-based jazz fusion supergroup Russ Kaplan +7, featuring members of Red Baraat, Mostly Other People Do The Killing, The Funk Ark, Gedeon Luke & The People and The Awakening Orchestra, has been nominated for two Independent Music Awards.

The band, led by Russ Kaplan, former keyboardist for Claude Coleman’s Amandla, released their debut album The Ulysses Cycle on Ropeadope Records last year. That album is nominated for Best Concept Album, and the track “Pigz In Space,” which features bassist John Davis from Nerve and beatboxer Chesney Snow, is nominated for Best Funk/Fusion/Jam Song.

The awards, now in their 13th year, are voted on separately by a panel of professional musicians and via online voting, and in each category a winner is picked by both groups. Previous winners include Bernie Worrell, Marco Benevento, Chris Whitley and Flying Lotus, and this year’s judges panel includes Ziggy Marley, Suzanne Vega, Tom Waits, Del McCoury, and G. Love.
