HeadCount celebrated their tenth anniversary with a special show featuring Bob Weir & RatDog at the Brooklyn Bowl along with a slew of special guests. The band took the stage to a sold out Brooklyn Bowl for the opening “Hell in a Bucket” before Weir dedicated “Queen Jane Approximately” to HeadCount’s Jane Henderson. The first set would play out with only one guest, as John Popper made an unannounced appearance for “Little Red Rooster,” adding harmonica to the tune.

RatDog would handle the rest of the set, dishing out “Ramble On Rose,” which prompted a venue-wide singalong as well as a spirited rendition of “Mission in the Rain” and the set-closing “Throwing Stones.” The final set of the night would prove to be an endurance test for all involved as the opening segment of “Shakedown Street” and “Bertha” stretched well beyond their limitations. Disco Biscuits bassist and HeadCount co-founder Marc Brownstein jumped on stage for the opening two tunes as well as vocalist Alecia Chakour, further fleshing out the band’s sound.

Every song in the second set would feature some variation of special guests, as Umphrey’s McGee guitarist Brendan Bayliss took his turn next with “Help on the Way” and “Slipknot!” (a tune Umphrey’s has covered several times) featuring Bayliss sharing vocals with Weir. All three guitarists on stage—Bayliss, Weir and Steve Kimock—led the band into an improv section that ultimately found itself into “Sugaree” which included another guitar-led moment for Brendan Bayliss.

As the set wound to a close, several members of Lettuce took the stage as guitarist Eric Krasno as well as Ryan Zoidis and Eric Bloom joined in on a lengthy “Eyes of the World” before segueing into a more familiar cut as the band covered The Beatles’ “Dear Prudence” before an energetic take on “Not Fade Away” closed the thrilling set.

If the second set seemed taxing, it appeared the band had plenty left for an encore. This time it was unannounced guitarist Nels Cline who joined the band for “Franklin’s Tower” and the closing “Turn On Your Lovelight.” The Wilco guitarist just wrapped up a run with Phil Lesh & Friends at the Capitol Theatre last week. Cline led the group to the finish as the show clocked in at just over three hours, with eight guests in total taking the stage to celebrate the momentous occasion.
