After finding themselves committed to their respective solo projects for the better half of the year, the members of Phish finally found themselves on stage together for the first time since their Jazz Fest performance. As they celebrated the release of their twelfth studio album Fuego, the band took the stage for two performances at the Ed Sullivan Theatre for David Letterman.

Early in the afternoon, the band would play “The Line” for the Late Show taping and then hang around the Ed Sullivan Theatre to play an hour-long set for the Live on Letterman series. Surprisingly opening with the pairing of “46 Days” and “Undermind,” Phish then dug into their first “new” song of the evening with “Halfway to the Moon.”

The Page McConnell-penned tune, which has seen road action since 2010, sounded as polished as it ever has since it’s foray into the studio, with McConnell’s vocals sounding fresh as the band readies for the start of their summer tour. Next up was “Carini,” which sent the crowd into a frenzy, temporarily shaking the camera mounted on the balcony of the theatre.

Improv-wise, there wasn’t much to grasp onto due to the time constraints, however Trey Anastasio did manage to lead the band into a brief groove before ending the song. After the oldie, “Devotion to a Dream” and the funky “555” followed before Phish closed the “set” with “Twist,” which included an expertly crafted exercise in musical communication, as have been the standard with recent versions of the song. An encore of “Character Zero” was all that was necessary to cap the hour-long performance.
