Widespread Panic Honor Talking Heads, Vic Chesnutt, The Band at Red Rocks

Widespread Panic delivered a few surprises during their three-night run at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre this past weekend. On Friday, the band treated fans to their first “Bayou Lena” since November 8, 2008 during the second set, while the encore consisted of a trio of Talking Heads covers—“Papa Legba,” “Life During Wartime” and “City of Dreams.”

Saturday night saw Panic pay tribute to singer-songwriter Vic Chesnutt as the group performed four of his songs, “Aunt Avis, “Degenerate,” “Protein Drink” and “Sewing Machine” during the second set. The band then invited Madison Smith, the daughter of one of the band’s roadies, on stage to play percussion for a show-closing “Chainsaw City” during the encore. Sunday night also featured another tribute, as Panic closed out their first set with a series of tunes by The Band—“Ophelia,” “The Shape I’m In” and “Chest Fever.”

They also offered video stream of the Saturday night show as well as still offering the now customary free soundboard stream for those who didn’t want to buy the video. Panic is on top of their game.

Don’t forget they also honored Van Morrison and Bloodkin too— 2 Van songs back to back on Friday, and 3 Bloodkin songs on Sunday.

I love Panic and have been all over to see them but I’m bummed to say, Red rocks 2014 was kind of a stinker. Friday night was the exception for me. They rolled their sleeves up on a really standard set list and went to work and made it special. Saturday and Sunday were both very choppy and lacked flow. I think they really shit the bed with the Sunday encore. But I still love me some panic and will see them again in Charleston in the fall.

I Agree with KB. Had the finished Sunday off with a couple different songs I would have been much happier . Still glad I made the trip.
Viva Twitch!!’ Vegas here we come if I survived the dry heat on the drive there:)

Twitch, I remember you and your crew. We met in the upper north lot. I guess you survived Red Rocks. I hope you make it through Vegas and get better shows than we did in Morrison.
