Phish’s Saturday night show at Northerly Island in Chicago can be filed in the “fun” category. The band and crowd alike seemed to enjoy themselves as Phish moved through two cohesive sets heavy on teases and spur-the-moment jams that kept things fresh despite playing tunes in heavy rotation thus far this year.

Opening with a funky pair of “Moma Dance” and “Wolfman’s Brother,” Phish settled into the first set with additional cuts such as “Devotion to a Dream,” a rocking “46 Days” and the Mike Gordon-led “Yarmouth Road.”

Following a tour debut of “Brian and Robert” and a rare first set “Wingsuit,” the short “Tube” started the tease-a-thon with the band taking a quick detour into bits of “Smoke on the Water” before transitioning into “Free.” Trey Anastasio would tease parts of “Wingsuit” in “Free” before heading into a “Roggae” that aligned perfectly with the sunset.

After “Heavy Things,” Phish closed the set with “Run Like An Antelope” and continued teasing more songs. Along with more “Smoke on the Water” teases from Trey, Jon Fishman quoted “Istanbul (Not Constantinople),” a popular 1950s swing tune made famous in the modern era by They Might Be Giants.

Phish’s second set would serve as its most cohesive of the year, as the group didn’t stop from the opening notes of “Carini” to the final note of “Cavern.” The opening pairing of “Carini” and “Waves” didn’t stray too far from the confines of the song, however the following “Fuego” (yet another on this tour) would spark more teases from the band. While the tune itself would include a “Little Drummer Boy” tease from Page and Trey, the following “Twist,” “Harry Hood” and closing “Suzy Greenberg” would all feature “Fuego” teases in some form, firmly establishing this as the “Fuego” tour.

Additional notes from the show included the tour debut of “Bug” in the encore along with just the second “Grind” and “Suzy Greenberg” of the year thus far. Phish’s Chicago run concludes tonight.
