String Cheese Incident key-wizard Kyle Hollingsworth is gearing up for the release of his third solo effort, Speed of Life, next month. The album finds Hollingsworth delving into some familiar sounds and also branching out to new territory. “Happening Now” is a fantastic example of the latter, as the keyboardist explores a synth-filled, electro-pop style that’s most associated with acts like LCD Soundsystem or Cut Copy. The song was written a few days after the birth of Hollingsworth’s youngest daughter, and the lyrics speak to the importance of being in the present and appreciating the moment. “Sonically, I wanted an ethereal vocal to give the sense of sleepy, timelessness,” explains Hollingsworth. The longtime brewer also adds that, “This tune could be paired with a Belgian Farmhouse Saison or an IPA. The beat dictates strong four-on-the-floor hop presence and stronger malt bill. While the layered vocal could be perceived as a lighter, slightly embellished, taste of a Belgian yeast.”
