The earliest incarnation of The Shins was Flake Music, formed in 1992 in Albuquerque. James Mercer, along with Jesse Sandoval, Martin Crandall and Neal Langford, released one album, When You Land Here, It’s Time to Return in 1997. The album will reportedly be reissued via Sub Pop and Aural Apothecary and is expected to arrive on November 28.

Speaking to The Oregonian, Mercer said that the album now “sounds like a fresh, new record” despite never being mixed properly. “We worked pretty hard on that band and we really went nowhere, you know? We went nowhere in Albuquerque. It didn’t do anything nationally.”

Flake Music disbanded in 1999, leading to Langford joining Mercer and Sandoval in The Shins. The bassist would leave the band in 2003 and Crandall left in 2009 along with Sandoval.
