Warren Haynes will use Jerry Garcia’s Wolf guitar at the upcoming Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration show at Charlottesville’s nTelos Wireless Pavilion on August 6 when he performs with the Richmond Symphony.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to be playing the Wolf, which Jerry Garcia played during the 1970s,” Haynes told the Daily Progress. “It’s quite an amazing instrument”
Garcia began playing Wolf in 1973 and relied on it for up to two decades. It was first played at a show with Merl Saunders at the Pirates Ball, a private party for the Hell’s Angeles at the New York City Harbor. Garcia last utilized Wolf at the Grateful Dead’s 2/23/93 show at Oakland Coliseum Arena. Doug Irwin auctioned off Wolf for $700,000 in 2002.
Update: Haynes will use the guitar at every show throughout the tour.
