Anyone know what the criteria was for this? What’s a club? Seems like 3000 capacity is larger than what I would expect for a “club.” There are 60 yr old theaters that can’t pack 3000. Are they a club? What about small clubs? Pretty bogus HOB has so many spots.

dc August 20, 2014, 15:33:28

love to see a list w/o the franchise operations on it

Pine Trees August 20, 2014, 15:35:22

HOB is a venue but not a club…I mean I guess technically it is but come on!!

Muleman August 20, 2014, 15:37:38

The HOB’s are Live Nation venues and are booked nationally. This puts many top draws at all the HOB’s, thereby skewering the numbers. Similar situation for the Fillmore’s. Attendance figures don’t make a venue popular. It only means the venue is able to book bands with big draws. Doesn’t mean anyone actually likes the venues.

jiggityjer August 20, 2014, 15:39:51

How about a list of venues not dominated by ticketBastard…. If there are any

Beezer August 20, 2014, 16:09:58

No better place the Penn’s Peak.

Dan August 20, 2014, 16:24:45

Clearly this is based on tickets sold, and I would not define “popular” as highest number of tickets sold. Therefore, this is just a bullshit list put out by Billboard… probably was paid to print this “list” as an advertisement for HOB.

danimal August 20, 2014, 16:53:22

8×10 for sure danimal.

Bill August 20, 2014, 17:25:16

Where’s bk bowl?

We dont care August 20, 2014, 17:29:05

Is this an ad for Umphreys New Years run? They won’t sell out any nights besides New Years that aren’t a weekend. They are a band full of lesbians with transexual fans.

John August 20, 2014, 17:55:16

Peasant’s Cafe in Greenville, NC was one of the best little clubs back in the day. Circa 1993-2001

@coffeewithian August 20, 2014, 18:22:17

How come The Capitol Theatre never makes any of these lists? What makes a venue a “club” and not a theatre?

derpa August 20, 2014, 18:28:34

I can think of plenty of theaters that are smaller than these “clubs”. I guess I always figured a club was something less than 1k and didn’t have floor seating

Rxstoner August 20, 2014, 19:20:20

The paramount…. How did the paramount of Huntington LI sell 127k that’s crazy. Never would of thought that. Bk bowl probably not on this list because they use ticketfly and cash entries most likely not counted. At least not all of them….

the doctor August 20, 2014, 19:45:50

I promise you, HOB isn’t even in New Orleans’ Top 10 most popular clubs. Who came up with this crap?

Fish Bulb August 20, 2014, 20:51:33

I get why HOB Boston is #2, but man, I’m telling you nothing beats the Paradise Rock Club for an intimate venue.

I call BS August 20, 2014, 21:01:30

I highly question these numbers. This can’t be based on tickets sold. The San Diego HOB is mostly a ghost town. So, they would need attendance of about 1,000 almost every other night to attain 155K. I wonder if any person that walks in off the street for a beer or lunch is counted? Anyway, highly questionable numbers and just another reason to avoid HOB’s (or websites that spoon out their slop).

JP76 August 20, 2014, 21:22:44

Right on Fish Bulb – I’ve been going to the Paradise for 20 years and it’s got way more character than HOB. It’s so intimate that I actually ended up taking a piss right next to Derek Trucks one night before a DTB/Frogwings show back in about ’97 or ’98.

lol August 21, 2014, 07:52:59

The House of Rules is clearly the place to be. Would be interested to see the list of the top 25 independant clubs/venues. Tabernacle, although a JiveNation venue, is still pretty awesome. Seen many a great show at the HOB Nola as well.

Doug August 21, 2014, 10:36:36

The Fillmore in Denver is horrible on many levels. The floor is hard and makes many a back ache, the beer is as costly as their is the city, the restrooms are small for the venue, and they search as you go in like you are an terrorist. I only go there if I really want to see a band. It is the biggest indoor venue in the area, so I am not shocked its on the list. However if you are visiting Denver there are 20 music venues I would pick over it.

MarZaPhiGar August 21, 2014, 11:05:17

I’d like to take a peek at Dan Ackroyd’s bank account. Mission from God indeed!

mac August 21, 2014, 14:35:25

I am compelled to comment! This is a horrible list. What is the point of listing the HOB in every friggin big market. Do a little research and put together a list of the best independently run clubs in America. Geesh.

DennisT August 21, 2014, 20:08:14

Where is the fantastic Brooklyn Bowl? Best GA room in the northeast.

Seamus August 22, 2014, 13:17:30

This list is almost as bad as Billboards top 100 list.

Jeff August 25, 2014, 17:43:51

How can Toad’s Place in New Haven, CT not be on this list. Capacity/Attendance does not a popular club make? Would The Stones ever pick a HOB to play a pre-tour warm up?

bobcat_gowait August 26, 2014, 13:47:39

this is so stupid. Same logic as the Grammys. All built on the assumption that the entity that sells the most, has to be the “best”.

Greg Mulehead August 26, 2014, 18:40:54

I like 8×10 (not on list too small great place to tape from balcony) and LC pavilion-Columbus (outside pavilion on other side of stage for summer is nice too). Tabby here in Atlanta is OK but Georgia Theatre in Athens is better but also too small for list.
Terrapin beer is a huge plus. 9:30 club sucks and is one of the worst venues I’ve been too. Nazi cops hard to puff can’t go outside sound sucks all of the above. State Theatre Falls Church is best DC area “club”.
