Phish’s three night run at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park came to a close last night as the group breaks until their Fall tour kicks off in October.

The 13-song first set began with the first “The Curtain With” opener since 6/19/88 in Burlington, VT. Following the rare opener, Phish dug into some more familiar cuts in “Wombat,” “Kill Devil Falls,” “Bouncing Round the Room” and “Poor Heart” before getting into “A Song I Heard the Ocean Sing” which featured a brief extended jam section. Following the McConnell-led “Lawn Boy,” “Wolfman’s Brother” allowed the band their real first shot at improv. The 13-minute jam saw all four members contributing as they moved through a funk-oriented jam.

Following a pair of newer tunes in “Waiting All Night” and “Winterqueen,” the band broke out a now-rare cover of “Funky Bitch” before a brief “Tube” that led into the set-closing “Possum.”

Much like they did the previous night, Phish came out charging to start the second set with a 15-minute “Chalk Dust Torture,” a song that has consistently spawned expansive improv throughout the summer. Following a “Twist” and “The Wedge,” Trey Anastasio started the opening lick to “Tweezer,” leading into a promising jam that ended with a messy segue into “Sand.” Towards the end of the Farmhouse tune, Phish made an impressive return into the “Tweezer” riff, recalling their Merriweather Post Pavilion show earlier in the summer that featured many returns to “Tweezer.”

Following the pairing of “Piper” and “Joy,” the closing “Mike’s Groove” would be highlighted by one of the best “Mike’s Song” jams of the 3.0 era. In a time where the song is relegated to a Type I-jam, Phish stretched this particular version out moreso than most before transitioning into “Sneaking Sally Thru the Alley.” The funk jam following “Sally” flowed perfectly into the set-closing “Weekapaug Groove.” “Loving Cup” and “Tweezer Reprise” fittingly closed out the encore.

Next up for Phish is their Fall tour opener October 17 in Eugene, OR. In the meantime, Trey Anastasio will play select orchestral shows to celebrate his new composition, Petrichor.
