Jack Johnson brought his 2014 summer tour to a close at the Santa Barbara Bowl in his old college town of Santa Barbara, CA on Labor Day. As he had throughout his run in support of the 2013 album From Here to Now, Johnson collaborated with a number of friends throughout the night.

Johnson’s old college friends ALO, who share keyboardist Zach Gill with the singer/songwriter and were brought on to open the final few nights of the tour after support act Michael Kiwanuka bowed out due to health reasons, kicked off the night. A few songs into their opening set, ALO brought out Johnson’s drummer Adam Topol for a take on their original “Falling Dominoes.” Soon after, Johnson himself emerged for a number he recorded with ALO almost a decade ago, ““Girl I Wanna Lay You Down.”

The members of ALO returned the favor during Johnson’s headlining set. First, Steve Adams, Dave Brogan and Dan Lebowitz emerged—on melodica, Wurlitzer and guitar, respectively—sat in for “Breakdown.” Then, Adams and Brogan switched to percussion and Lebo picked up the pedal steel for “Upside Down” and “Flake.” A bit later, Adams returned to the stage along with members of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros and Beastie Boys keyboardist Money Park for Johnson’s breakthrough number “Rodeo Clowns.” They remained as Borgan joined in on “Staple It Together.”

Before he turned his focus to music, Johnson was a world-renowned surfer and surf movie filmmaker, so it is no surprise that his is close friends with surfer-turned-musician Kelly Slater. The champion surfer took the stage during Johnson’s encore for “A Pirate Looks at Forty” and returned at the end of the night with the members of ALO and Edward Sharpe for “Better Together.”

The all-star jam session was a fitting close to a highly collaborative run. In addition to ALO’s nightly sit ins, Bahamas played with Johnson at La Jolla, CA’s UCSD RIMAC Field on August 30 for “Breakdown,” “ Upside Down,” “Flake” and Steve Miller Band’s “The Joker.” Likewise, Johnson’s pal Eddie Vedder made a surprise appearance at George, WA’s The Gorge on August 23 for the Ramones’ “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend,” Pearl Jam’s “Soon Forget,” “Only The Ocean” and The Beatles’ “Rocky Raccoon.” The same night, Amos Lee joined Johnson for “Dock of the Bay.”
