Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel declared September 23 as “David Bowie Day” to coincide with the new Bowie retrospective, David Bowie Is… that will launch at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art on the same day.

Emanuel described Bowie in his proclamation (via Consequence of Sound) as an “undisputed global icon boasting a catalogue of 26 critically acclaimed studio albums.” He also said that Bowie’s “remarkable half-century career has bridged cultures and faiths while both transcending and fortifying the music, art, fashion & design, and theatrical canons.”

The installation has also made appearances in London, Berloin, Sao Paulo and Toronto over the last two years. The interactive exhibition features over 300 items from Bowie’s personal archives including handwritten lyrics, original costumes, photos, album art and rare performance material from his career.
