Apple will shut down Beats Music less than a year after its launch, according to Consequence of Sound. The tech company acquired the streaming service for $3 billion designed to rival digital music platforms such as Spotify and Pandora.

Tech Crunch is reporting that most of the Beats Music engineers have already been moved onto other Apple projects, including iTunes. Tech Crunch is also reporting that Apple may still implement Beats Music’s streaming technology into iTunes, citing a source who says the company plans to make some “significant” music announcements in the first half of next year.

Beats Music was founded by Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine, who launched a successful line of headphones as Beats Electronics before dipping into the streaming world. The duo brought on Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor as creative director prior to the launch of the streaming service.

Apple PR rep Tom Neumayr told Recode that TechCrunch’s story is “not true.” Recode goes on to speculate that Apple may aim to modify the brand over time and wants to stay in the music streaming business. Apple also told Recode that the Beats brand “may go away.”
