Tom Lieber, founder of Lieber Guitars, is recreating Jerry Garcia’s famed guitars Wolf and Tiger in honor of the Grateful Dead’s upcoming 50th anniversary. Lieber was a longtime colleague of Doug Irwin, who famously built five of Garcia’s axes, including Wolf and Tiger. 12 editions of each guitar will be hand-built for the occasion.
Garcia took the stage with Wolf between 1973 and 1993, while Tiger was in his arsenal from 1979 until his death in 1995. Following a legal battle, both guitars were given to Irwin after Garcia’s death, with each being sold at auction for large sums shortly thereafter. In recent years, Wolf has been played by guitarists like Warren Haynes and Neal Casal.
