Bob Weir is the subject of The Faithful, a series airing in San Francisco regarding fans of the local football team, the San Francisco 49ers. This episode, rightfully titled Grateful Faithful, features the guitarist discussing his origins in the Bay Area and “pathological” fandom with the team in their early days.

Weir offers rare glimpses into the early days including meeting Jerry Garcia in a music shop on New Year’s Eve, growing up in a musical household and of course, playing football in school. Weir says he was a middle linebacker and third string quarterback before he “ran off to the rock and roll world.”

Speaking of San Francisco sports, Weir along with bandmate Phil Lesh and San Francisco Giants’ third base coach Tim Flannery sung the National Anthem before Game 3 of the NLCS yesterday as the Giants took on the St. Louis Cardinals. Watch the performance here.
