Phish returned to Oregon for the first time since 1999 when they opened their fall tour at the Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene last night. The show saw the group’s first-ever take on the Trey Anastasio Band tune “Plasma,” as well as a nice a cross-section of songs and some interesting “Sleeping Monkey”-related banter.

The night got started with the Fuego track “Waiting All Night,” which was followed by “Free” and a “Poor Heart” that segued into “Sample in a Jar.” Renditions of “Strange Design” and “555” came next before the band went into a string of well-executed classics—“Bouncing Around the Room,” “Reba,” “Roggae,” “Simple,” “Maze” and finally “The Squirming Coil”—to round out the second half of the set.

Following set break, the band returned to the stage to kick off their second stanza with “Carini” for the fifth time this year. The opening tune jammed seamlessly into “Plasma,” a song that has been in the TAB repertoire since 2001 and which appears on the 2003 album of the same name. A low-key “Farmhouse” and “Halfway to the Moon” came next before a jammed out “Twist” and an improv-heavy “Crosseyed and Painless” moved into “Harry Hood” and “Rocky Top” to end the set. A standard “Wingsuit” then opened the encore, before guitarist Trey introduced “Sleeping Monkey” as keyboardist Page McConnell’s favorite song, noting that this version would be for him. The tune featured some audience-interaction, as the crowd chanted one of the choruses. The show then came to a close when the tune segued into a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Quinn the Eskimo.”

Phish will continue their fall tour tonight when they take the stage at Seattle’s KeyArena. As previously reported, the show will be webcast via LivePhish.
