The Allman Brothers Brothers kicked off their final run of live performances at New York’s Beacon Theatre last night. The band, who have played over 200 shows at the Beacon since 1989, will retire after October 28.

The band opened their set with a take on The Spencer Davis Group’s “Don’t Want You No More” before launching into on “It’s Not My Cross to Bear” and their first take on “Just Another Rider,” a Gregg Allman/Warren Haynes collaboration from Allman’s 2011 solo album Low Country Blues. Through “Just Another Rider” was the show’s only true debut, the group structured their setlist a bit differently from previous opening runs and focused on some of their more reflective songs. From there, the band moved into the Haynes-led “Feel Like Breakin’ Up Somebody’s Home,” “Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More” and a take on “You Don’t Love Me” that segued into an instrumental jam based around “Will the Circle Be Unbroken.”

The six-song second set was bookended by two familiar tunes, “One Way Out” and “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.” In between, the group opted for takes on the Eat a Peach tune “Stand Back” as well as “Spots of Time,” Idlewild South’s “Revival” and the second Elmore James cover of the night in “The Sky is Crying“and “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.” The fitting encore of “No One to Run With” capped the night.

Allman, in particular, seemed lively and engaged, breaking from tradition to address from the stage multiple times during the night. He also moved from his organ seat to the band’s onstage VIP seats to watch his fellow ABB co-founders during their extended drum jam during “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.”

The Allmans will return to the Beacon stage tonight. As previously reported, Gregg Allman confirmed that there will be no guests on this run and through one night, that appears to be the case.
