Phish returned to the Santa Barbara Bowl last night for a cover-heavy show that featured the tour’s first Marimba Lumina work, as well as an unprecedented “Mike’s Groove.” It was the final show of a two-night stand at the picturesque California amphitheater.

The covers began immediately as the band launched into its first rendition of Bob Marley’s “Soul Shakedown Party” since July of 2012. They had hinted at the opener earlier in the day via their Phish From The Road Instagram account, which featured a photo of Trey Anastasio practicing in front of a framed picture of Marley, who performed at the venue in 1979 (see above). The band then moved into “The Wedge.” “Undermind” and “Horn” before back-to-back covers of The Mustangs’ “Ya Mar” and ZZ Top’s “Jesus Just Left Chicago.” A dark “A Song I Heard The Ocean Sing” was followed by “Winterqueen” and “My Friend, My Friend,” with standard takes on the always-psychedelic “Split Open and Melt” and “Walls of the Cave” wrapping up the set.

The band came out swinging with a big “Drowned” to open up the second set, much like their October 26, 2013 Worcester show. The Who cover proved itself one of the most cohesive jams of the night before going into a “Theme From The Bottom” that seamlessly morphed into “Steam.” A “Waves” that jammed nicely into “Twenty Years Later” was then followed by a “Scent of a Mule” that saw Jon Fishman bust out the Marimba Lumina for the first time this tour, while Mike Gordon worked his fight bell into the mix. The night’s final cover—“Also Sprach Zarathustra” (aka “2001”)—turned into a set-closing “Mike’s Groove” that featured a “Runaway Jim” filling for the first time ever (the “Weekapaug Groove” that wrapped things up included “Jim” and “2001” teases).

Finally, the band returned for an encore that saw a “Silent In The Morning” that was preceded by “The Horse” for the second time in two years, suggesting that this year’s Dicks version was not a one-off return of the pairing. The night then ended with a solid “Run Like An Antelope” that featured quotes and teases from the “Soul Shakedown Party” that kicked off the night.

Phish will continue their fall tour tomorrow night when they head to The Forum in Inglewood, CA.
