Phish returned to The Forum in Los Angeles last night for the first since time 2003. The quartet came out the gate strong as they opened the show with “46 Days” and “Tube” before working in their first “Train Song” in 52 shows. Next, a rare first set “Ghost” was followed by “Sparkle,” “Sample in a Jar” and “Divided Sky,” which marked the first time that a track from the band’s 1989 studio debut Junta has appeared on the current tour. The Fuego staple “The Line” then preceded an “It’s Ice,” “Kill Devil Falls” and “Bathtub Gin” that closed out the set. Interestingly, “Gin” featured a jam based around War’s “Low Rider,” as well as additional teases of the tune and Leo Sayer’s “Long Tall Glasses.”

The second set got going with a quick “555” and “Backwards Down The Number Line” before moving into the night’s biggest moment, a 16+ minute unfinished “Down With Disease” that veered in a few directions before morphing into an improv-heavy “Fuego.” “Twist” and “Bouncing Around the Room” were then followed by “David Bowie,” the night (and thus the tour’s) second foray into Junta. The typically heavy-hitting “Character Zero” then put an exclamation point on the set.

Phish returned to the stage for a well-executed “Harry Hood” encore that saw Chris Kuroda utilize the venue’s starry ceiling lights to great effect. Finally, the band put down their instruments to wrap up the show with the Undermind a capella number “Grind.”

Phish will continue their tour tonight when they take the stage at the Sleep Train Amphitheatre in Chula Vista, CA, just outside of San Diego.
