Phish opened the first night of their run at San Francisco’s Bill Graham Civic Auditorium with a bang last night when they busted out the instrument-swapping number “Walfredo” for the first time since June 27, 2010. The track was played in honor of Phish fan Adam Berger, who passed away earlier this year. Berger’s friends launched an online campaign to get his favorite song played when the band came through his adopted hometown of San Francisco and the band obliged. (Phish also played “Driver” in honor of another late Phish fan during last year’s SF run).

In addition to the “Walfredo,” highlights from the first set included tour debuts of “Camel Walk,” “Axilla,” “Brian and Robert” and “Party Time,” marking the second time that each of those tunes has appeared this year. The “Axilla” was also followed by “Rift,” which created a high-energy combo, while a solid “Stash” preceded the set-closing “46 Days.”

A typically-groovy “Sand” got the second set going before the band dropped into a brief “Birds of a Feather” that was followed by the night’s second Fuego track, “Waiting All Night.” Next came the show’s biggest jam, a 16+ minute “Ghost” that played into a trio of tour debuts as the band worked “Bug,” “Seven Below” and “I Didn’t Know” into the mix. The “Seven Below” was particularly well executed, while the “I Didn’t Know” was preceded by some goofy banter. A quick “Chalkdust Torture” and “2001” came next before the set wrapped up with a more or less standard “Slave to the Traffic Light.”

Phish then returned for the encore and, while the night had already featured 9 tour debuts, the band was not finished just yet. Upon taking the stage the band debuted an instrumental take on the baseball classic “Take Me Out To The Ballgame,” clearly paying tribute to the San Francisco Giants (the team is currently one game away from winning the World Series). The new cover was followed by “Winterqueen,” with the Beatles’ “A Day In The Life” finally closing out the show.
