Gov’t Mule and Jackie Greene came together for a special “YoungMule” show, celebrating the music of Neil Young. The themed set followed a first set of non-Neil tunes, such as the opening “Mule,” “Thorazine Shuffle,” “Scared to Live,” “Kind of Bird” and more.

For the second set, Mule and Greene took to the stage for a 27-song set spanning the famed guitarist’s entire career. The band used various arrangements on songs such as “For the Turnstiles,” which was played without Danny Louis and Jorgen Carlsson. For “After the Gold Rush,” Haynes, Abts and Carlsson all left the stage as Greene took the lead on the title track from Young’s 1970 effort. Other highlights from the set included an opening take on “Cinnamon Girl” as well as “Fuckin’ Up,” “Mr. Soul,” “Ohio,” “Hey Hey, My My,” “Down By the River” and a heavy duty rock take on “Rockin’ in the Free World.”

The ensemble played with their most unique lineup on the first tune of the encore, Young’s “Piece of Crap.” Mule’s Matt Abts shouldered lead guitar and vocals duty while Danny Louis played bass, Jorgen Carlsson took to the drums and TJ Centrella, Chris Austin and Eric Hanson joined the band on stage for background vocals. This was the first time the tune has been performed by Mule. A more familiar take, for Haynes in particular, “Cortez the Killer,” closed the show.
