Umphrey’s McGee’s annual Halloween Mashup show featured two well-constructed sets along with four mashups spread throughout the show at Boston’s House of Blues, the first time the band has spent the holiday in Boston.

The first set featured extended takes on “1348,” “In the Kitchen” and “Ocean Billy” all in succession before the band offered a high energy version of “Hajimemashite.” After “Mail Package,” the newer “Bad Friday” and the equally-as-new “Educated Guess,” the band closed the set with their first mashup of the night, “Walk this Sweet Funk Emotion.” The tune combined parts of Aerosmith’s “Sweet Emotion,” Run DMC’s “Walk This Way” and James Gang’s “Funk 49.” At one point in the performance, Brendan, Jake, Joel and Ryan Stasik all found themselves on percussion.

Set two kicked off with another extended jam on “The Triple Wide” which featured snippets of Modest Mouse’s “Tiny Cities Made of Ashes” before the band moved into their second mashup, “Give It To Me Mama Jama.” The song featured takes on Carl Carlton’s “She’s a Bad Mama Jama” and Rick James’ “Give It To Me Baby.” After this mashup, Umphrey’s would deliver a series of heavy hitters including “All In Time” which segued smoothly into “Glory” and the end of “Ocean Billy.” The following “Nothing Too Fancy” saw the end of “All in Time” before giving way to a lengthy “Puppet String.”

The third mashup closed the second set and featured a trio of the biggest artists covered on this night as the band took on Radiohead’s “National Anthem” (which they have covered on its own before), Beck’s “Loser” and Phil Collins’ iconic “In the Air Tonight.” The encore kicked off with Stevie Ray Vaughn’s “Lenny” before the final mashup, “Strangletage,” closed the show, a mix of Beastie Boys’ “Sabotage” and Ted Nugent’s “Stranglehold.”

As always with the Umphrey’s Halloween show, the mashup costumes worn by the band are always noteworthy. Brendan Bayliss came out as Run D.M.C.C. DeVille (DMC and Poison’s C.C. Deville), Jake Cinninger was Devo Snyder, Joel Cummins was Clark Kent Tekulve and Super Manny Ramirez, Andy Farag was Slaxl, Kris was Weird Al Pacino and Ryan Stasik was Hasidic Julia Roberts.
