Phil Rudd has been charged with trying to arrange two murders, as well as possession of methamphetamine and cannabis, in New Zealand. The 60-year-old AC/DC drummer entered no plea for the charges at the Tauranga District Court, and was released on bail until November 27. Few details have been revealed, but he is accused of trying to hire a hitman to kill two men.

Rudd, who was born in Australia, moved to New Zealand in 1983 after he was kicked out of AC/DC, though he ended up rejoining the band in 1994. He also played on the group’s forthcoming album Rock or Bust, which is set for release on December 2.

UPDATE:

Prosecutors in New Zealand have dropped the murder-for-hire charges against AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd, saying there is not enough evidence to move forward.

Rudd’s lawyer, Paul Mabey, says that police made the decision to charge him with the crimes before consulting prosecutors. The New Zealand Herald reports that police have refused to answer any questions regarding their decision.
