Ryan Adams returned to Carnegie Hall in New York last night for a rare solo acoustic show as the singer-songwriter supports his latest self-titled release. Adams, who tweeted out recently that deep cuts would be played on this night, delivered as he peppered the 22-song setlist with rarities from his various projects as well as hilarious banter that has become the norm at his shows.

The first bustout came in the form of “Damn Sam (I Love a Woman That Rains),” one of five Heartbreaker tracks on the night. The tune made its first appearance since 2012. The Gold track “Nobody Girl” followed later, marking a rare solo performance and just its second play in three years.

Adams also dusted off a pair of tracks that appeared sporadically during his 2011 solo tour in Easy Tiger‘s “Off Broadway” and the Love is Hell bonus track “Halloween.” The singer also appeased the setting with “New York, New York,” drawing cheers from the hometown crowd. After taking to the piano and improvising a tune about Billy Ocean in the voice of Michael McDonald, Adams delivered another rare take in “Sylvia Plath” before returning to guitar for “Crossed Out Name,” the only song played from Cardinology on this night.

“Where I Meet You in My Mind” followed, just its second play ever. Adams remarked that the unreleased song came about in the batch of songs he recorded prior to his Ryan Adams sessions. The album and songs were never released, but the song, which Adams described as “really long,” made an appearance on this night.

The show closed with more bustouts from Adams’ 2011 solo tour as the Heartbreaker track “Amy” made its first appearance since and Adams also busted out some Whiskeytown material as “Avenues” (also played three times in 2012) preceded the “Come Pick Me Up” closer.

Along with the aforementioned Billy Ocean banter/improv, Adams also took the time to offer up his thoughts on Terminator 2 as well as stories about listening to R.E.M. while tripping and how he felt like “the scuff on a clean shoe” performing at such a prestigious venue like Carnegie Hall.

Adams and Butch Walker, who opened the show, return to Carnegie Hall on Monday night.
