Jerry Garcia’s iconic “Captain Trips” Uncle Sam hat will be auctioned off at Christie’s on December 16. Christie’s estimates that the hat is projected to sell for approximately $46,980-$78,300.

Garcia wore the hat for photo shoots with Herb Greene and Gene Anthony in 1966 and 1967, some of which were reproduced on the cover and liner of the Grateful Dead’s self-titled, debut album in ’67. The hat was also featured in the “Something’s Happenin’ Here: Bay Area Rock and Roll 1963-73” exhibit at the Museum of Performance and Design in San Francisco, CA in 2009.
