Founding Jefferson Airplane singer Marty Balin joined his old bandmates Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen when he sat in with Hot Tuna at the Beacon Theatre in New York City on Saturday night. The show, which doubled as a celebration of Casady’s 70th birthday, included a number of rare Jefferson Aitplane tunes and also featured guest appearances by Teresa Williams, Larry Campbell and others.

Williams was the first to take the stage when she came out for a cover of Reverend Gary Davis’ “Children of Zion” in the middle of the first set. Balin then joined Williams and Hot Tuna for rare takes on Jefferson Airplane’s “3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds” and “Plastic Fantastic Lover.” Williams then helped the band with the Fisk Jubilee Singers’ “Wade In The Water” before Balin returned with Campbell to back her on the Airplane classic “Somebody to Love.”

The second set kicked off with a series of songs from the Marty Balin Trio, which features the singer with Chuck Morrongiello and Lloyd Goldstein. The group was eventually joined by Hot Tuna, who got going with a rendition of Jefferson Starship’s “Papa John.” The trio then exited as Williams returned for a soaring “White Rabbit” before the band honored Casady with a bass guitar-shaped birthday cake. Next, Williams led the band through “Sugaree,” which was followed by takes on “Bar Room Crystal Ball,” “Water Song,” “Big River,” “Candy Man” and “Deep Elem Blues” that featured Campbell.

Balin and Morrongiello made their way back out to help the band with Jefferson Airplane’s “Volunteers” for the first encore, and the show wrapped up after Williams came out for a cover of Reverend Gary Davis’ “Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burning.”
