Michael Franti and Spearhead have released “Same As It Ever Was (Start Today),” a new song that was written after a New York City grand jury decided not to indict police officer Daniel Pantalo for the death of unarmed civilian Eric Garner.

Speaking with Rolling Stone, Franti said “I was really shocked… Having seen the tape of the Garner killing, I could not see how no indictment was possible. When I saw Garner’s family members speaking on TV, it was really emotional for me.”

The lyrics to Franti’s new song, which were written with product Di Genius, call for peace between police and the communities they are supposed to protect. According to Franti, the song is not an attack on the police, though he does believe officers should be held accountable when innocent people die because they made a wrong decision.
