The fourth night of Umphrey’s McGee’s five-night run at the Tabernacle in Atlanta saw the band feeling loose and having fun as they delivered one of the most unique shows of the run.

To start, the band dug into three songs with immense improv in the opening “Higgins,” “Der Bluten Kat” and “2×2.” The “DBK” was extremely loose as Jake Cinninger jumped on keys with Joel Cummins to jam on Grandmaster Flash’s “The Message.” Brendan Bayliss also teased “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life” during “2×2” and then remarked he hoped everyone had the time of their lives during this run.

As many had predicted throughout, a brief acoustic set seemed destined to happen and it did on this night. Bayliss and Cinninger switched to acoustics and the band dug into “Uncle Wally” and “Nemo” which contained a middle jam of “Sweetness.” The set-closer came in the form of Crosby, Stills and Nash cut “Southern Cross,” which the guitarists have performed at their Holiday Show in Chicago.

Set two picked up where the beginning of the first left off as the band opened with another one of their jam vehicles in “Hurt Bird Bath.” The extensive performance saw the group shift into “Upward,” half of the Raw Stewage cut “Onward & Upward.” After a trio of “Push the Pig,” “The Fussy Dutchman” and “Conduit,” former STS9 and current Seven Arrows member David Murphy replaced Ryan Stasik on bass. While Stasik hung out side stage, Murphy and Umphrey’s dug into Pink Floyd’s “In the Flesh” and “Another Brick in the Wall” before Stasik rejoined for the closing “Mail Package.”

Further proving their relaxed manner on this night, the band strolled out for the encore dressed in all white robes. They promptly launched into “Glory” before a closing “Slacker” that once again saw Cinninger and Cummins team up for another “The Message” jam.

Umphrey’s returns tonight to finish their five-night run.
