Phish’s third night of their New Year’s run in Miami featured a “Weekapaug Groove” for the ages as the band stretched out the tune to produce a standout version in the 3.0 era. To start, Phish delivered a first set that saw the band stick to the script more or less with takes on an opening “Free,” “The Moma Dance” and “Possum,” among others. The band stretched their improv legs on “Roggae” and “Stash” before a funky “Back on the Train.” A trio of newer tunes (“Sugar Shack,” “The Line,” “Ocelot”) followed before a “Squirming Coil” closed the set.

As previously mentioned, the second set was among the most notable throughout the run as the band kicked things off with “Mike’s Song.” The tune segued into “46 Days” for just the second time ever before giving way to “Weekapaug Groove.” What would end up as a 17-minute jam would feature the standard Type I jam followed by Trey Anastasio jumping on the marimba lumina for a second jam while Mike Gordon took up the guitar duties from Anastasio.

The band then moved into “Fuego” which segued wonderfully into “Slave to the Traffic Light,” which led into a mid-second set “Also Sprach Zarathustra,” leading into the closing “Walls of the Cave.” A two song encore of “Sleeping Monkey” and “Rocky Top” closed the show. “Rocky Top” came fittingly on the same day that Tennessee won their bowl game against Iowa 45-28.

Phish returns to close out their New Year’s run tonight in Miami at the American Airlines Arena.
