Phil Lesh’s Terrapin Crossroads kicked off its celebration of the Grateful Dead’s 50th anniversary with a pair of Phil and Friends shows this past weekend. The lineup for the evenings consisted of Lesh, Cody Dickinson, Scott Law, Ross James, Stu Allen and Jeff Chimenti. As previously reported, the performances were the first in a series that will see Lesh recreate the feel of a show from each year of the band’s history throughout 2015.

Friday night’s concert naturally focused on 1965, the first year of the Grateful Dead. The night began with Lesh and rock photographer Jay Blakesberg taking the stage for a conversational history lesson and an explanation of the 50th anniversary series before the band came out for the music. The one-set show featured plenty of tunes from the Grateful Dead’s early repertoire, including renditions The Top Notes’ oft-covered “Twist and Shout” and the Rolling Stones’ “Off The Hook,” as well as the “Stealin’/Don’t Ease Me In” combo (the two songs appeared on the bands’ first-ever release, a 7” single of the same name from 1966).

Saturday night’s show was based around 1966—specifically the Grateful Dead’s December 1 show at The Matrix in San Francisco. Lesh and co. recreated the show in its entirety, even going so far as to play “Me & My Uncle” twice (the 1966 gig featured two full versions of the John Phillips-penned song). Much like the previous night, Saturday also included a number of blues covers, as the Grateful Dead were short on originals in the mid-60s.

In addition to playing tunes from the era, both shows also saw all three guitarists—Allen, James and Law—perform with hollow body guitars just like the Grateful Dead did during their early days. According to Jay Blakesberg, the band also played without any effects pedals, while Allen took up a Guild Starfire axe that was the same make and model as the one that Jerry Garcia played in those years.

Phil Lesh and Friends will continue their 50th anniversary series at Terrapin Crossroads throughout the year, with the 1967 and 1968 shows slated to take place on January 16 and January 29, respectively.
