Joe Russo’s Almost Dead treated Freaks Ball XV to a scorcher last night at the Brooklyn Bowl. The two-set show featured a total of 15 songs that were all debuts for the high-energy Grateful Dead tribute act, which features drummer Joe Russo, keyboardist Marco Benevento, bassist Dave Dreiwitz and guitarists Tom Hamilton and Scott Metzger.

The night began with a take on “Alabama Getaway” that was followed by “Alice D. Millionaire,” a rare Dead tune that was only performed a few times in 1966. The tune segued into “Greatest Story Ever Told” before the band wove “Black Peter” into “Lost Sailor” and then “Saint of Circumstance.” The set finally came to a close with “Big Railroad Blues.”

Set two started strong with a rocking “Feel Like A Stranger” that was followed by a “Stagger Lee” that seamlessly played into the Louisiana classic “Iko Iko.” Next came a “Mississippi Half-Step” that segued into the “Sugar Magnolia” > “Sunshine Daydream” combo before the band closed out the set with “Mission In The Rain.” Russo and co. then returned to round out the night with “They Love Each Other” encore.

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead will return to the Brooklyn Bowl tonight for the second and final night of Freaks Ball XV.
