Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” has sold about four million copies worldwide and is one of the most successful singles of the year. Now, Tom Petty will see a portion of those royalties, as Consequence of Sound points out.

According to The Sun, Petty and Smith settled out of court when his lawyers proposed that the song bared a striking resemblance to “I Won’t Back Down.” Now, the song’s credit on ASCAP features Smith along with Petty, Jeff Lynne and Jimmy Napes as the chief songwriters. Petty and Lynne will also receive a 12.5% writing credit.

A source close to the case said that the settlement was done behind close doors “without any mud being slung.” The source also went on to say, “After it was pointed out to Sam’s camp, they didn’t try to fight it and amicably dished out royalties. It wasn’t a deliberate thing, musicians are just inspired by other artists and Sam and his team were quick to hold up their hand when it was officially flagged.”
