On Friday night, Grammys weekend began with the MusiCares Person of the Year ceremony honoring this year’s recipient—Bob Dylan. An all-star cast of musicians gathered to pay tribute to the legendary singer-songwriter as the likes of Beck, Jack White, Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young and Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi all took the stage to pay homage to Dylan.

While Dylan did not perform, his speech has made waves over the last 24 hours. In a revealing acceptance speech, Dylan thanked the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Johnny Cash (who he called “a hero of mine”) for their influence. “[Hendrix] took some small songs of mine that nobody paid attention to and pumped them up into the outer limits of the stratosphere and turned them all into classics,” he said. “I have to thank Jimi, too. I wish he was here.” He also took some time to mention the Byrds, Turtles and Sonny & Cher for popularizing some of his tunes, saying, “They made some of my songs Top 10 hits but I wasn’t a pop songwriter and I really didn’t want to be that, but it was good it happened.”

As for the performances, Beck kicked off the evening with a take on “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat” before Aaron Neville took to the stage for “Shooting Star.” Other notable covers included Jackson Browne delivering the classic “Blind Willie McTell” as well as Trucks and Tedeschi’s bluesy version of “Million Miles.” White offered his take on the Desire cut “One More Cup of Coffee,” Crosby Stills & Nash took the stage for “Girl From the North Country” and the night came to a close with Springsteen playing “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” and Neil Young’s finale of Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind.”

Along with the live performances, video testimonials from the likes of Paul McCartney, Martin Scorsese, Jeff Bridges and more were also shown. For a full transcript of Dylan’s speech, head over to the LA Times.
