Chicago will not allow camping outside of Soldier Field during the Grateful Dead’s “Fare Thee Well” 50th anniversary celebration. The Chicago Tribune reports that the Chicago Park District, Police and Fire departments have decided against permitting fans to park or camp overnight.

Luca Serra, a spokesman for Soldier Field, told the publication, “We took this seriously and did not want to dismiss it..All of us came to the conclusion that this is an exceptional event, but that does not exempt the fact we put safety first … And staying overnight can be a recipe for the unforeseen.”

Deadheads were hoping that the City of Chicago would allow the move, especially since most hotels in the area are already booked up for the weekend. A fan by the name of Jeremy Davis even started a petition on Change.org asking the city to permit overnight camping near the venue.

As previously reported, the core four surviving members of the Grateful Dead will perform at Chicago’s Soldier Field on July 3-5. The shows, which are billed as the group’s final appearance together, will also feature Trey Anastasio, Bruce Hornsby and Jeff Chimenti. Tickets for the event have already sold out.
