Famed documentary filmmaker Albert Maysles passed away last night after a battle with pancreatic cancer. He was 88 years old.

Maysles and his brother David, who died in 1987, were considered pioneers of the cinéma vérité style. The pair achieved acclaim with their films Salesman and Grey Gardens, as well as 1964’s The Beatles: The First U.S. Visit and their iconic 1970 documentary Gimme Shelter. The latter film provided an unprecedented look at the Rolling Stones’ legendary 1969 American Tour, which culminated in the infamous Altamont Free Concert.
