Yesterday we reported that a jury had ordered Pharrell Williams, Robin Thicke and T.I. to pay the Marvin Gay estate $7.3 million for infringing upon the copyright of Gaye’s 1977 classic “Got To Give It Up” with their 2013 hit “Blurred Lines.” The trio have now released a statement on the ruling, which reads:

While we respect the judicial process, we are extremely disappointed in the ruling made today, which sets a horrible precedent for music and creativity going forward.  Blurred Lines was created from the heart and minds of Pharrell, Robin and T.I. and not taken from anyone or anywhere else.  We are reviewing the decision, considering our options and you will hear more from us soon about this matter.

As previously reported, the legal battle began in 2013, when Pharrell, Thicke and T.I. pre-emptively sued the Gaye family in order to determine if “Blurred Lines” infringed on the copyright of “Got To Give It Up”. The Gaye family then counter-sued, claiming that Pharrell & Thicke had copied the tune.
