John Popper made a surprise appearance at the New York bar Durden earlier this evening. The Blues Traveler frontman, who was at the East Village establishment during happy hour to film an interview for a documentary, treated the approximately 20-person crowd to a solo harmonica version of the classic “But Anyway.”

The surprise appearance was particularly notably because Durden is located on the former site of the famed live music venue Nightingale. Blues Traveler regularly played Nightingale in 1988 and 1989, and the club also helped foster the careers of God Street Wine, Spin Doctors, Jono Mason and many others. (GSW even penned a song about the club.) Through Nightingale stopped regularly hosting live music in the mid-1990s, the bar kept its name until a few years ago and occasionally hosted “family reunion shows.”

Blues Traveler’s last known show at Nightingale was a 1993 performance that is featured in the music video for the song “Defense and Desire,” which also name-checks the venue.
