Photographer Danny Clinch has launched a Kickstarter campaign for a documentary on the late Blind Melon singer Shannon Hoon.

The singer died of an overdose 20 years ago and until his death, had been documenting the band’s rise to fame with a video camera. That footage will be molded into a documentary by Clinch and Colleen Hennessy, among others. The Kickstarter is designed to gather money to fund the use of archival footage in the film and to get legal clearance for the music.

On the site, Clinch says, “Shannon Hoon left behind over 200 hours of personal footage from his own camera; an impressive body of work that rivals his output as a musician. He began filming before Blind Melon met, and through this film, we experience the entire journey of the band from being anonymous L.A. transplants to 90’s rock icons. This film documents the band’s rise to fame, Hoon’s family life, his creative process, his tumultuous struggle with addiction, and his hope for the future in a way that honors the footage he shot while maintaining a genuine and authentic story.”
