Last month, Orange Beach, AL Mayor Pro-Tem Jeff Silvers expressed his unhappiness about an upcoming Widespread Panic concert in his town by deriding the band’s fanbase as, among other things, “floppy.” Now, a group of Widespread Panic fans are organizing a great response to Silver’s negative comments about their community.

AL.com reports that Orange Beach resident and WSP fan Michael Butler is leading the charge to turn the May 22 concert into “The Flopper’s Ball,” which he and other members of the Widespread Floppers Facebook group hope will become the biggest food drive of the tour. In addition to dropping off canned goods for the fan run charity Panic Fans For Food, organizers are also asking attendees to come to the show in full costume.

“Everybody is (being encouraged to) attend the show dressed  to the nines. Girls will come wearing their best sparkly dresses, and guys are coming out in tuxedoes,” Butler tells AL.com. “It’s a way of putting a positive spin on the whole thing. There is no intention to fuel any fires. We love Orange Beach. It’s not about sticking it to the man. It’s just a respectable, classy show of style.”

Butler added, “We want to make (the Orange Beach show)  the best, most successful food drive of the tour… They will have their ‘official’ drop-off near the venue’s main gates. Canned goods are what are being asked for. We will coordinate with the band representative to insure our collections will be combined together and all credit is giving to Widespread Panic and their fans.”

Widespread Panic will perform at The Wharf in Orange Beach, AL this Friday.
