The Benevento-Russo Duo returned for a brief, mostly improvisational set at the Mountain Jam Festival this afternoon. The group—which brought keyboardist Marco Benevento and drummer Joe Russo together from 2001 through 2008—took the stage for a surprise set during Benevento’s Mental Floss workshop in Healey Brothers Hall. The roughly half hour performance consisted primarily of jams, though the music did morph into James Booker’s classic “Junco Partner” at one point.

While Benevento and Russo have shelved their duo for many years, the pair have played with each other on countless occasions since then. Their Grateful Dead tribute project Joe Russo’s Almost Dead even performed on the festival’s East Stage just a couple of hours after their spontaneous duo set.

Mountain Jam will continue this weekend in Hunter, NY with performances by Robert Plant & The Sensational Space Shifters, Gov’t Mule, The Black Keys, Grace Potter, Alabama Shakes, Big Gigantic and many more.
