A special version of Jazz & Colors came to Chicago’s Field Museum on July 4 prior to the Grateful Dead’s 50th anniversary show on Saturday night. A slew of local jazz musicians including the Bird Song Quintet, Frank Catalano Sextet, Makaya McCraven, Marquis Hill, Twin Talk and many others positioned themselves throughout the museum to perform the music of the Grateful Dead.

Throughout the two sets, musicians offered up their jazz takes on tunes like “Shakedown Street,” “Dancing in the Streets,” “U.S. Blues,” “Casey Jones,” “Truckin’‘” and many others while museum attendees browsed a selection of Grateful Dead memorabilia including Jerry Garcia’s “Tiger” guitar, which was on display along with a variety of rare posters, photos and collectibles from the band’s existence.
