In a new interview with Radio.com, Warren Haynes spoke out against the Confederate Flag, with a South Carolina bill to remove it currently moving to the House.

“I’ve been in favor for a long time of getting rid of any public display of the rebel flag,” Haynes said. He did go on to say that there are still a lot of people who “only associate it with positive thoughts, and the South, and Southern music.”

The Asheville, NC native added, “When I look back and think that there were a lot of bands flying the flag in the old days, I guess we were just much more naive at that point, and didn’t realize how it is interpreted by the people who are offended. And that’s really what it’s all about. I’m a Southerner, I can’t tell you how long I’ve thought it was offensive.”

Haynes noted that he’s “really proud” of what’s happening in the Southern states, with more of a push to remove the flag from state houses. “Be proud of who you are. You don’t need a symbol to be proud of who you are.”
