Phish returned to Austin, TX last night for their first show in the Lone Star State since their appearance at Austin City Limits in 2010. As Trey Anastasio remarked early on, this was a homecoming show of sorts for him, as he was born in nearby Fort Worth, TX.

The group came out with a loose, funky “Party Time” which got the crowd moving on a hot Austin night as the band tore through several high energy tunes like “Free” and a brief “Halley’s Comet” before stretching out “Wolfman’s Brother” like they normally do with Anastasio taking the reins after a funk section.

After Anastasio addressed the hometown crowd, the group dove into a particularly twangy rendition of “Possum,” fitting for the occasion. The closing seven songs of the set would feature a brief breather for the band, as they worked in “Lawn Boy,” “Bouncing Around the Room,” “Water in the Sky” and the first “Dirt” since 2013. Since its birth in 2009, “Sugar Shack” still struggled to find a consistent home in the setlist, placed and played awkwardly before the straightforward “Run Like an Antelope” to close the set.

The second frame kicked off with arguably the evening’s most creative moment as the opening licks of “46 Days” quickly led into another Chilling, Thrilling Sounds track “The Dogs.” The quartet stuck the landing back into “46 Days” proving that whatever rust they may have had in the first set was indeed gone.

“Piper” contained hints of the group wanting to stretch it out but instead opted for “Ghost” which picked up on the leftover improv and triggered an interesting series of events as the band then opted to alternate ballad for high energy song throughout the rest of the set. “Ghost” gave way to the tender new tune “Shade” before the band kicked up again with “Gotta Jibboo.” A pair of new songs, “Waiting All Night” and “Blaze On” followed, with the latter sticking closer to the script than the 16-minute version unleashed earlier in the tour.

The 12-song set concluded with “Wading in the Velvet Sea” and a straightahead yet high-energy pairing of “David Bowie” and “Suzy Greenberg” which led into “Tweezer Reprise,” wrapping up the “Tweezer” from Saturday night. Phish returned for an encore of “Loving Cup” before exiting for good.

Phish’s Texas run continues tonight in Grand Praire, TX.
